Visible Threat
Once these salt patches become visible, that land and the land close to those salt patches, for all intents and purposes, is already unfit for growing certain crops. To help farms through the Delmarva region, DSI Resident Faculty member Pinki Mondal is part of a research team investigating the extent of these salt patches as well as their root causes.
Insights For Future Innovations
DSI Faculty Council member Arthi Jayaraman, Centennial Term Professor for Excellence in Research and Education in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and her lab are developing computational methods to help experimentalists design new, innovative materials for a variety of fields and applications.
Material Improvements
In work recently reported in Nature Communications, DSI Affiliated Faculty member Dion Vlachos and researchers in the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation (CCEI), with collaborators from Brookhaven National Laboratory, made some surprising findings as they were developing techniques to better understand the role oxygen plays in how carbon-based catalysts perform.
2023 IEEE/ACM International Conference: Best Paper Award
A multidisciplinary team of researchers from the College of Engineering, led by UD assistant professor and DSI Resident Faculty member Leila Barmaki, and co-author, DSI Affiliated Faculty member Joshua Cashaback, received the Best Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE/ACM international conference on Connected Health: Applications, Systems and Engineering Technologies (CHASE), which took place in Orlando, Florida from June 21-23. The paper title is "Virtual Therapy Exergame for Upper Extremity Rehabilitation Using Smart Wearable Sensors."
Understanding Drug Tolerance
DSI Affiliated Faculty member Abhyudai Singh, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Delaware, is using $2 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health to develop computational tools for understanding the mechanisms behind specific cell states within cell populations.
Upcycling Plastics
DSI Affiliated Faculty member Dionisios Vlachos, the Unidel Dan Rich Chair in Energy and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, is the corresponding author of a new paper in Nature Sustainability.
Points, Counterpoints and Data Points
DSI Affiliated Faculty member Lindsay Hoffman, associate professor of communication at the University of Delaware, is studying whether the national “College Debates and Discourse” program designed to facilitate respectful interactions makes any difference in what students think about controversial issues.
Quantifying Global Algal Blooms
DSI Affiliated Faculty member Yun Li part of research group using satellite imagery to quantify and characterize global harmful algal blooms.
DSI Founding Director Cathy Wu named 2023 Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology.
Founding Director of the UD Data Science Institute, Cathy Wu, Unidel Edward G. Jefferson Chair and Professor of the College of Engineering’s Computer and Information Sciences department, has been named as a 2023 Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB).
Mind and Body
DSI Affiliated Faculty member Joshua Cashaback, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, received an NSF CAREER award to study the relationship between decision-making and movement control. The long-term goal of this research is to develop novel rehabilitation programs for patients with neurodegenerative disease.
