Delaware Lyme Disease Education Oversight Board Appointment
Jennifer Horney, DSI Faculty Council member and founding director and professor of the epidemiology program in the College of Health Sciences, has been appointed by State Sen. David Sokola to the Delaware Lyme Disease Education Oversight Board.
Computing-Based Solutions to Real-World Problems
DSI Associate Director Benjamin Bagozzi, and DSI Faculty Council member Sunita Chandrasekaran, co-chaired the University of Delaware’s Data Science Institute (DSI) and AI Center of Excellence (AICoE) first joint DSI + AICoE Hackathon from July 17-19 2023 at the Ammon Pinizzotto Biopharmaceutical Innovation Center.
Visible Threat
Once these salt patches become visible, that land and the land close to those salt patches, for all intents and purposes, is already unfit for growing certain crops. To help farms through the Delmarva region, DSI Resident Faculty member Pinki Mondal is part of a research team investigating the extent of these salt patches as well as their root causes.

Material Improvements
In work recently reported in Nature Communications, DSI Affiliated Faculty member Dion Vlachos and researchers in the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation (CCEI), with collaborators from Brookhaven National Laboratory, made some surprising findings as they were developing techniques to better understand the role oxygen plays in how carbon-based catalysts perform.
2023 IEEE/ACM International Conference: Best Paper Award
A multidisciplinary team of researchers from the College of Engineering, led by UD assistant professor and DSI Resident Faculty member Leila Barmaki, and co-author, DSI Affiliated Faculty member Joshua Cashaback, received the Best Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE/ACM international conference on Connected Health: Applications, Systems and Engineering Technologies (CHASE), which took place in Orlando, Florida from June 21-23. The paper title is "Virtual Therapy Exergame for Upper Extremity Rehabilitation Using Smart Wearable Sensors."

DSI Affiliated Faculty member Abhyudai Singh, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Delaware, is using $2 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health to develop computational tools for understanding the mechanisms behind specific cell states within cell populations.
