Hackathon FAQs

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where a group of people, typically including software developers, designers, and other technology enthusiasts, come together to collaborate on a project, usually over a period of a few days. The participants work intensively to develop new software, hardware, or other technology-based solutions to address a specific problem or challenge.

The DS-AI Hackathon is a 3-day hackathon hosted by The Data Science Institute (DSI) and AI Center of Excellence (AICoE) at UD . We aim to bring together the UD community and local industry partners to work collaboratively towards solving problems in their codes, data or applications. Data Science, AI and HPC research are all welcome!

When is the DS+AI Hackathon?

Monday, July 17, 2023 – Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Who can join the Hackathon?

The UD Community (faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students) as well as industry groups local to the Delaware area are welcome.

How do I participate?

If you are a faculty member or an industry partner, and have a problem/case study, use this form to register.

Do I need a team?

You are welcome to join as a team or solo. If you have a team, please fill the registration form accordingly. If you are a faculty member or an industry partner who doesn’t have a team, please only tell us about your problem/case study. We will find local participants (UD students/postdoc) to work on your problem/case study.

Will this be a hybrid event?

The DS+AI Hackathon will be in-person at Ammon Pinizzotto Biopharmaceutical Innovation Center, 590 Avenue 1743, Newark DE, 19713

Does it cost anything to register for the DS+AI Hackathon?

It is free to participate!

How many people can be on a team?

You can have up to 4 people on one team.

What should I bring to the Hackathon?

We do not provide computers, so please make sure you bring a laptop with you.

Will I be assigned a mentor?

For the DS+AI Hackathon, key mentors will be selected from a pool of potential candidates that includes DSI Fellows, CIS PhD students, and interested senior undergraduate students. These mentors will possess the following qualifications:

  • A background in Python (and potentially other programming languages)
  • Expertise in developing ML pipelines and working with datasets
  • Familiarity with utilizing UD DARWIN and other types of clusters
