Designing Cities for 21st-Century Weather
As weather extremes become the new normal under climate change, DSI Resident Faculty member Jing Gao is working to understand how urban land patterns can help reduce population exposure.
2024 Fellows Class of Optica
DSI Affiliated Faculty member Gonzalo Arce, of the College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was named as a member of the 2024 Fellows Class of Optica (formerly the Optical Society of America). This year’s class includes 129 fellows from 26 countries who were selected based on their outstanding contributions in advancing optics and photonics research, business, education and engineering as well as for their service contributions to Optica.
Assessing Living Shorelines
Researchers at the University of Delaware are exploring ways to help build coastal resilience while also providing benefits to the Delaware Bay ecosystem. The project is led at UD by DSI Affiliated faculty member Jack Puleo, professor and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Expanding the Reach of Research with Open Access
Over the past year, the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press has increased its efforts to support initiatives around open access publishing. “The Library, Museums and Press believes that knowledge is a global public good,” said DSI Infrastructure Working Group member Annie Johnson, associate university librarian for publishing, preservation, research and digital access. “We support open access to scholarship because it fosters knowledge equity, helps accelerate discovery and innovation, and promotes public trust in higher education.”
Next-Generation AI Educaton
DSI Faculty Council member Sunita Chandrasekaran, the AI graduate certificate’s program director, states that UD’s new graduate certificate in artificial intelligence is designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge needed to pursue careers in AI research, development and application development.

The Power of Data
The 2023 Data Science Symposium brought together a broad cross-section of researchers from academia, industry and businesses across the Mid-Atlantic region on Sept. 22. Topics covered a range of research underway, with an emphasis on efforts in the areas of fintech and health equity.
Eigenmann Appointed Co-Director of UD’s FinTech Enterprise
DSI Faculty Council member Rudolf Eigenmann, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, will co-direct the University of Delaware’s collaborative endeavors at the new FinTech Innovation Hub on UD’s Science Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus.
