Rare Earth Mining

DSI Resident Faculty Members Kyle Davis and Federica Bianco are co-authors of a study published in the journal Remote Sensing, which used remote sensing techniques to look at changes in mining surface footprints between 2005 and 2020 in two rare earth mines located on either side of the Myanmar-China border, within Kachin State in northern Myanmar and Nujiang Prefecture in Yunnan Province in China.

2024 Fellows Class of Optica

DSI Affiliated Faculty member Gonzalo Arce, of the College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was named as a member of the 2024 Fellows Class of Optica (formerly the Optical Society of America). This year’s class includes 129 fellows from 26 countries who were selected based on their outstanding contributions in advancing optics and photonics research, business, education and engineering as well as for their service contributions to Optica.

Expanding the Reach of Research with Open Access

Over the past year, the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press has increased its efforts to support initiatives around open access publishing.  “The Library, Museums and Press believes that knowledge is a global public good,” said DSI Infrastructure Working Group member Annie Johnson, associate university librarian for publishing, preservation, research and digital access. “We support open access to scholarship because it fosters knowledge equity, helps accelerate discovery and innovation, and promotes public trust in higher education.”

DSI Faculty Council member Sunita Chandrasekaran, the AI graduate certificate’s program director, states that UD’s new graduate certificate in artificial intelligence is designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge needed to pursue careers in AI research, development and application development.
